It can takes months of pairing for a female to ovulate unless shes already got some big follicles going. Have you palpated her?

X2, even if she was building follicles before you put the male with her it still will take a couple months before ovy. Unless the follicles were already around 40mm or so, but I believe she would have reabsorbed them without seeing a male before they got that big. Just keep pairing, make sure you give the boy rest after a lock for a few days and keep doing it until she is noticeably gravid or he stops breeding her. Find what schedule works for you, but try putting the male in for 3 days and then take him out and rest him for 4 days. If he locks and then unlocks before his 3 days is up go ahead and take him out to start his rest. Good luck with breeding and make sure you ask a lot of questions!

Check out this web site for a good idea of what goes on during breeding.

Of course I have not palpated her. If I was palpating, I'd be way more advanced than I am. LOL

Some on this site have said to wait 4 weeks before introducing the same male to the same female. Yet, now some say 3-4 days.

Can I palpate her now, after she locked 4 days ago?

You can palpate whenever you like. Some females will start building follicles before they even see a male. If a male isn't introduced they will absorb the follicles. If you only have one male going to that one female then no, you don't need to put him in every 4 days. Put the male in every couple weeks for 3-4 days and if you see a lock then take him out after they are done. The other schedule I mentioned was if you have a male circling a few females. There isn't a need to overwork your male on one girl.

Thanks, does the fact they are in enclosures only 18" from another increase the likelihood the male has a "presence" she senses, even though not in the same tank. IE She smells him close, so the produces follicles?

You can palpate anytime. Early in the season I pair mine once a month, when they start building big follicles and are getting closer to ovulation is when I start introducing males once a week for 3 or 4 days. Hope this answers your question.

Its possible they can smell each other and get excited. The process will take a few months just keep pairing, you'll get there...
