No I havent read the 17 day diet book but I will safely assume that the reviews people posted on the diet outlines the basic process.
Cycle 1, called "Accelerate," strips your diet down to the bare bones of approximately 1,200 calories per day. It promises weight loss of 10-15 pounds, most of which is water weight.
“This phase cleanses, hydrates, removes unhealthy carbs, improves unhealthy eating habits, and stimulates fat metabolism," Moreno says.
In cycle 2 (called "Activate,") the food plan is alternated with a slightly higher-calorie activate plan. Moreno says the zig-zag between cycles keeps the metabolism guessing, helps prevent boredom, and continues to stimulate fat burning to yield about a 5-6 pound weight loss.
Cycle 3, called "Achieve," is the stabilization period that allows healthier foods with a slower rate of weight loss of about 2-3 pounds, Moreno says.
Cycle 4 -- the final phase, called "Arrive" -- is when you arrive at your goal weight. In cycle 4, follow meal plans from one of the earlier cycles during the week with controlled splurges on weekends to maintain your new weight.
Exercise at least 17 minutes a day during the first two cycles – primarily walking because of the limited calorie intake. In the later cycles, ramp up exercise to 150-300 minutes per week for continued weight loss.

Cutting your calories down to 1200 a day will put your metabolism into starvation mode. Meaning it will slow it down. Once your metabolism is in this mode your body will do its best not to burn a lot of energy.
On the second cycle you will be adding more calories to a slow metabolism. This will not simply move your metabolism out of starvation mode and metabolism shocking or confusion is not a proved hypothosis.

In your videos, he even states that a high protein, good sources of fat and low carb diet with "unlimited" calories works for weight loss and that's exactly what the book goes by if you would actually take time to read it.
Here's an excerpt from the ACTUAL BOOK that you might find interesting:
"On this Cycle [the Accelerate Cycle] you can eat unlimited protein—including meat, poultry, eggs and fish, as well as many vegetables. But you limit your carbohydrate intake by initially cutting out white bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, chocolate, biscuits and sugary desserts and sweets. Fruit and fats are not banned, and that’s good because both will add sweetness and flavor to your diet."
Funny...isn't that what the guy in your video just preached about (near the end of the video)? Sounds like these guys might get along! So realistically, the amount of calories one gets each day on this "diet" is based off of how full one feels, not the calorie count.
I invite you to read the book and then come back to me instead of selecting general reviews from selected sources. I'm sure you can go to the library and pick up a copy if you don't want to spend money on it.
"Starvation mode happens via hormonal changes with leptin and ghrelin (which can cause cravings/extreme hunger) as well as lowered energy (if you move less + sleep more, you burn fewer calories). It takes a long period (weeks or even months) of eating less than 50% of your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)."
--Pulled from MFP
To address the study in your video, I would be in serious trouble if I dropped my TDEE by 50% for an extended period of time.
My personal TDEE = 1569.8 calories
50% of that would be = 784.9 calories
Lesson here? I'm not a burly manly man that needs more then 3000 calories a day or I will start being whiny, moody or throw hissy fits when I'm standing in line for food. I couldn't say the same thing if I dropped my cals down to 784 though; I would be a hormonal walking nightmare, but I'm not dropping my TDEE by 50% so I shouldn't have the same problems that those men did. My goal is to stay within the 1500 cal limit and considering I would be eating about 1000 cals (or more) less then I do right now, I would still shed plenty of weight and actually be on a healthy path without risking my health.
But really (and sorry if this comes off as mean), why are you trying to argue with me about a book that you have never read? It seems kind of backwards and ridiculous and all I'm hearing out of you are assumptions about the book and some opinions from a guy with a video camera about things that don't even pertain to the book itself or it's methods for weight loss (considering that there is no calorie restriction on the diet and that's what the video was about).
So I guess what I'm asking for is for you to stop assuming what this book is about and actually pick it up and read it before you criticize it with such scrutiny. Again, I know it says "DIET" in the title but you can't just assume it's another crash diet based off of the title.

Sounds like someone has their panties in a bunch, sorry if I ticked you off but I stick to what I said. In a year let us know how the results are.

I don't know where you're getting this indication that I have my "panties in a bunch", I really don't know how you came to that conclusion. Quite the contrary; I just feel that someone shouldn't argue about something that they haven't looked into. That's all that post was about; no hints of anger - I just know that some people get all defensive when their assumptions are proven wrong (hence the "sorry if this sounds mean" statement).
I addressed your concerns and videos and you just want to write me off because I debunked your false accusations? Oh well....I guess you can't convince everyone.
I'm actually curious now to see what type of meal plan you follow. I'm just confused as to how you want us to lose weight without a calorie deficient of some kind. I'm overweight because I eat over my maintenance calories....so how would cutting that back be bad for me and make me fatter? It would only make me fatter if I did a deficit (within an unhealthy range), got down to a good size and started overeating again on a regular basis [which does happen with some people]. What do you recommend?
Be sure and private message me in a year to remind me to send you current pics of myself after all of this because I will probably forget.
