Thanks everyone, I'm just concerned this person isn't taking proper care of it if they don't even know what it is. I'd like to find out asap in order to start tracking down some care sheets.

Re: Stumped
Looks like a Queen Snake, or maybe a Mississippi green water snake.

The head and face make me think anaconda, but I know it can't be that easy. I too can ask a few people for you.

Re: Stumped
Leah,
I've done a little google searching and it definitely looks like a water snake. There are some water snakes with the eyes on the top and side. IMO it looks like it's a water snake from the colubrid genus, Nerodia. Now which exact species, I don't know. It's head shape, eye placement, and scaling makes me think it is from the Nerodia Cyclopion species, but the belly is making it difficult to pin point.

I've been thinking about buying some good books that'll help me identify snakes and other reptiles. What do you recommend?

I don't know what it is but I do know it's definite NOT a queen. We have tons of queens out where I work and that is not one.

One suggestion I have got was a water snake/anaconda hybrid. Not sure which kind of water snake though.

That's not possible... Anaconda is a boa and therefore has live birth.. Water snakes are colubrids and lay eggs..
