To the OP, if you're looking to make it a serious hobby most people have some added excitement to it - so it's not just running around looking under bushes.
Some people will bring their kids along, or will collect data. Myself, I love to backpack, so I'll plan hiking trips around looking for herps. I also love photography, so taking photos of what I find adds some exitement - looking for that perfect shot. Myself, as well as many others also have "life lists" to keep track of everything you've found/seen in the wild. I have ones for primates, reptiles, and amphibians - birders are well known for their life lists.
Anyways, the point is, if you don't find it interesting enough to just look for herps, then pair something up with it.
