in side the compartment is likely ºF or ºC mine has a soft buttons around the display. Emissifity, light, mode (hi, low, average E) , laser≤ and thermocoupler. It is more expensive than most, my other one doesn't have a laser at all. a bit a tape over the laser would work. It is usually a separate hole.
