A BP dying before being able to breed is probably more likely than the likelihood of it reaching breeding age and, season after season, refusing.

    I agree with this.

If you are patient enough and not trying to push it, 99% of the animals out there will breed. There is always that arbitrary 1% of doubt, but I can't see how mother nature will not get involved and nature take its course.

The bottom line is don't expect it to happen immediately.. Plan for other choices if things don't work out that year.

Deserts seem to be the next big flavor. They are pricey, and look clean and pretty, but personally I don't like them enough to spend the money for 'em.

Then again, obviously that is just my personal taste. If you like them, then go for it and make some stunning offspring!

For example, I love ghosts, and the combos they produce, though at the recent St. Louis reptile show, there was a breeder that told me he never could stand ghosts.

Deserts make everything so much brighter. It really is a stunning dominate morph and it makes everything just eye popping. I know a breeder that has a desert blast and it is one of the brightest bps i have ever seen.

I personally don't like how deserts look themselves. However, I believe they make the most gorgeous combos. Its a good investment IMO.

If was you and you are worried about a snake not breeding this is what I would do. Get just a ghost female for couple hundred. Then buy two males that are double gene co dom. You will spend a litrle more then 2k but it will give you way more options.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Deserts are amazing when combined with other mutations. However, there could be problems with females and fertility. As far as I know, there is no clear documented evidence that a female desert (single mutation or combo) has had a successful clutch hatch. Most breeders who have revealed their results tell of females that slug out or reabsorb their follicles. There have been rumors and people who "know someone" who has successfully hatched eggs from a desert female, but none of those people have produced any evidence.

That being said, there were discussions going on in a different forum earlier this year about female deserts needing more time to develop (at least three years) and possibly needing lower temperatures (higher temps might be linked to slugs). Unfortunately, with the tragic fire that destroyed Pro Exotics' entire desert collection, any results from these ideas will come much later now.

Knowing all this, I still decided to buy a male desert simply because the combo potential is so amazing. Even the desert mutation itself is amazing. My boy sometimes seems to glow. I can't wait to see what he does for me in the future.

Ya cant go wrong with a male desert. They are like pastels in the fact that they make anything you put them to that much better. I wouldnt give 100 bucks for a female though. There are guys that have been yrying to breed them for years. If it could be done with auccess it would have been done already. The guys saying that all ya gotta do is lower temps or this or that or tickle their chins and yadda yadda yadda are just trying to save a dying market on female deserts.

Thats strange, And thank you guys for bringing that up, Knowing this now there is no way I will spend $2000 on a female desert.

With these problems I cant belive females are going for 2g's

Well it is a highly sought after morph, and Pro Exotics was exploring the possibility that they only need lower temperatures in order to be fertile. I highly doubt that the bad rep desert females have been getting will last. It's only a matter of time before we figure out what makes them tick, and then it will be a non-issue.
