Hog Island boas would be a great first snake! They are (in my experience) very calm and love being handled. I would start off with a male because (again ime) they are calmer than females, and they stay smaller (usually). You definetly won't be sorry you got one( and they don't go on hunger strikes like some ball pythons I know
