Hog Island boas would be a great first snake! They are (in my experience) very calm and love being handled. I would start off with a male because (again ime) they are calmer than females, and they stay smaller (usually). You definetly won't be sorry you got one ( and they don't go on hunger strikes like some ball pythons I know )
