I use just enough perlite to keep the water in check, 4 tiny holes for ventilation and light diffuser panel for the eggs to sit on.
It works perfect for us, we have had a 100% hatch rate with 11 clutches this season.

Re: What do you use in your incubation tubs?
^^ This, except I use two holes, one in the back and one in the front, and substitute vermiculite. I was unable to find perlite around here that didn't have chemicals on it. I ended up ordering the vermiculite from Uline, and got two huge bags for a pretty good price.
I've seen a couple people using gravel, and I hope to experiment with that at some point. Once I get through this ton of vermiculite.. It can be cleaned and reused, and holds heat well.

I buy my vermiculite from a local feed store, I paid less than $20 for a huge bag.

Vermiculite is all i use. I dont elevate the eggs. Thousands of clutches done the same way over the years. I will say i like the idea of the crate methods but i guess im old school. Just been doin it this way for years
