The boaphile cages are plastic. The plastic that is used now is alot stronger than what was used in the past. It will not crack with age and the color will not fade. Since plastic is oil based there is not risk of rot.
Building one out of wood has the risk of rotting. Depeneding on the humidity it will either be sooner or longer. Im in south florida and with the high humididty if wood does not have some sort of sealer on it, it doesnt last too long. Expecially with misting snake inclosures that water is gonna absorb into the wood and they breaks it down.
I do alot of carpentry and have built fishtanks out of wood. If you like the look of natural wood go with it just make sure you find a sealer that is non toxic so it doesnt harm ur snakes.
