Butterflies!?

I know it might not fit here and kinda random.
but i want to keep butterflies in my house. They are soo damn pretty. >.>
Or a Luna Moth. But! It is not like i can really just walk outside and find just pretty creatures. Just wondering if any of you know where i get can get larva or caterpillars.....Ahah i looked on fauna XD

Well, you're in the perfect place to do it! Do you have a room with plenty of sun and ventilation? If you want everything indoors, you will need to be able to keep some sunshine-loving plants in your house. Start with the plants first - where will you put them? Once you have your plants in place, they can attract butterflies without any help from you (other than leaving a window or a door open).

Actually there's several places that specialize in butterflies! In fact Gainesville has a butterfly exhibit in the Natural History Musuem.

Greathouse Butterfly Farm is near me actually, and I used to have them as a client. Google shows several butterfly farms in the state, but they can ship both eggs and pupae, or even refridgerated butterflies. I even know of a place that sells silkworms.

It's a cool hobby although you have to make certain you have access to food for whichever species you want to keep.

Actually the back patio is screened in like a giant chameleon cage. I was kinda hoping to put them in there or screen half of it off for them..Ether that or moths XD

How about for someone like me where its winter half of the year. Does artificial uva/uvb lights count for them during winter months?

I think the uva/uvb lights would be more important if you were trying to keep plants growing, as a food source. I looked up info from a butterfly conservatory. They didn't have any info on what lighting they use, but they did say that they keep the conservatory at 85 degrees and 75% humidity. They have automatic misters set up to send out a fine mist hourly, so there is surface moisture available throughout the day. Sounds like a lot of work to me - I'll just enjoy what's outside!
