I'm not putting his hopes down, I'm being realistic.

Nobody, I repeat nobody is going to sell a $3000 snake for $300, that is just ridiculous.

It is a very lovely snake, and appears in good health, but I'll bet you my left kidney and right lung that's no 100% het pied.

Sure it could be a 66% het or 50% het , and may eventually even prove to be a pied, the chance is slim but there, but to naively think it's a guaranteed het is foolish.

To play devils advocate here, I have lesser's that are 100% Het Pied. I bread them myself, the father is in my rack (and is in my avatar). They aren't that hard to make (breed a visual pied with a lesser), so why the high cost? I was planning and have quoted $400 for the males and $500 for the females. Maybe I'm too low, but I just don't see $3k for something so easy to come by.

I would ask for a picture and a statement with the pic about the genetics. To get rid of the mites, use Reptile Relief. It is safe to use on the snake. For the rack use Provent a Mite.

Congrat's on a beautiful snake and i don't recall him asking if you thought it was a true het pied enjoy your new addition. Can't we all just be grateful he shared his new addition with us all instead of slamming his purchase.

I know Gale.. I was just picturing this guy, so excited about getting a beautiful animal and then hearing some stuff that is basically taking the wind out of his sails. Don't ask me why Im sticking up for him, don't know him... I just know how excited I am when I get a new snake and the last thing I want to hear is bad flack from fellow reptile lovers. Who knows? It could or it could not be what he bought.. as far as I'm concerned I wish him the best with the Lesser Pieds and hope he proves out. I totally know where you are coming from, and I understand your concerns. I have heard and seen stranger things happen with good deals.

I say, BEST OF LUCK TO YOU BUD!

And no hard feelings at all Gale, you have way more animals then I do, and I'm sure you know much more about the "business" side of everything then I do. I hope you are having a great breeding season, and I wish you the best with everything. Cheers.

Look, I'm not trying to be critical here and apologize if it came across that way. I just don't see how a Lesser het Pied would go for $3,000. Just looking at recent ads I saw a 100% Het Orange Ghost Mojave for $450 and another for $350. Even a BEL 100% Hypo is only going for $1,250.

If you know of somewhere that I can get $3k for my Lesser Het Pieds, please let me know and and I'll give you a commission on the sale! In fact, I have three hold back females that I may let loose if I can get that price for each of them. BTW, this isn't my sale as I have not sold any of my Lesser Het Pieds yet - nor am I advertizing. Just curious about the perceived value of this snake.

Re: New snake! The good with the bad...

Great looking animal. Most people on here swear by Povent-A-Mite for mite removal.

Also...As others have stated. If you have no paperwork or good word from a reputable breeder, I would not take it as being a het pied too seriously. If it proves out down the road, then good for you!

Best of luck with your new snake!

It has less to do with people wanting to criticize and more to do with people wanting to let him know how many scammers are out there.. I'm happy he got a great deal on a beautiful animal but say he falls on very hard times in 3 months and has to sell the lesser. Should he go on the word of a likely unknown breeder on the genetics and risk ruining his own name by selling it as something it may never prove to be? That's all it boils down to here.

Anyone who IS trying to downplay his purchase IS in the wrong here. I for one simply want him to know the importance of proven genetics on this hobby. If the het pied portion of the snake doesn't matter to the OP then he will take no hard feelings to any of this regardless.

As for the mites.. The mite off will kill mites on the snake but you have to kill the entire life cycle. Eggs, larvae, etc.. It requires about 2 weeks of treatments. The provent-a-mite does work wonders to do just this but you need to order it online and follow the directions exactly. Do not put it on the animal. Let the enclosure dry for at least 20 minutes before putting the snake back in. You'd only need one treatment of this.

If you can't get this, clean the enclosure and everything in it with a mild bleach and water solution. Keep the snake on white paper towels for some weeks so you can see the mites if there are any. Continue to spray the snake down every few days with the mite off. Use a small piece of paper towel or cotton ball soaked in it to rub the mite off around the face, heat pits, under the chin, etc.. Check the water bowl daily for mites. If you keep everything clean and do this diligently you should kill them before it becomes a problem.

If you have a bug spray (raid) designed to kill spiders, you can lightly spray a line around the floor of the table or shelf that the snakes enclosure sits on. This will create a barrier that any rouge mites can not pass. Even a small can of generic lice spray from Walmart or Walgreens. Their brand of NIX. Works great for this. Just be sure to only use this as a preventative barrier around things but not inside enclosures. Doing this will prevent any other reptiles you may have in your house from getting mites.

Be sure to deal with the infested snake last and not mess with any others that day unless you plan to change clothes, shower, etc.. It only takes one mite to start an infestation.
