wow...that's all i could really say
so there's a guy on craigslist here in Richmond and he's been trying to "rehome"his 6 foot burmese python for months..i dont want it because well...its already 6 feet long number one and number two my daughter is only 5 months old..so no.
anyway...i emailed him just to see if he knew what he was doing because the picture didnt look.."right"..i asked how much he wanted for it and its accessories and he said $200..then i asked if it had any health issues or RI..he emails me back with.."what is an "RI"?
wow.
that ended our "converstion"

Cut the guy some slack. Not everyone is going to instantly know everything about snakes the moment they buy one. I'm sure at one point, you didn't know what a RI was.

he said he's had the snake for awhile...so no i will not cut the guy some slack..people should want to know what they're dealing with
its a 6 foot burm thats not something you just have and dont learn about
and RI's were one of the first things that i learned about when i began keeping snakes
im still learning im not even close to an expert but to have an animal of that size and not no much about it seems odd to me whatever though

He may not connect "RI" to "respitory infection". At any rate, instead of cutting the guy off and gloating about a superior level of knowledge, you could instead have explained 'respitory infection' and given some symptoms, or even pointed him to a website(lik this one) where he could learn.
I know vets that don't realize initial terms for illnesses. It happens and everyone was new once. The length of time you've owned something doesn't mean you know what you're doing. After all, we've all heard of ball pythons being kept in a tank with no heat for years and still alive. Does that mean that it's right? No, it means they've been doing it wrong for a long time. You can own animals for decades and be a noob to proper care.
Only education can fix it.

it had nothing to do with superior knowledge.

That's what I was thinking. When I first started keeping, I knew about many of the common things to look out for, but was not so great on figuring out what the abbreviations were. Even simple ones like "UTH" had me stumped, and I knew exactly what an Under the Tank Heater was!
Call me stupid, but some people just have a harder time with abbreviations/don't think in abbreviations.
Reach for the stars, and if you don't grab them at least you'll fall on top of the world.

Yup. Took me ages to figure out what people were talking about when I saw "Ball Python: 2.4.3".

I've notice that there has been a large number of burms, rock pythons, and other large snakes being re-homed on CL in my area too. Some seem all right and some look entirely questionable. I have been stupid on abbreviations too but I really hope thats all the confusion was. I really think that people need to be responsible and educate them selves before buying any pet- especially a large reptiles that requires more than the average herp. Lets hope these animals make it into good homes because I can't take them!

I'm not going to speak to your intentions because I don't know you. But here is my perception. You say that you had no interest in the snake, so why email him in the first place? Also, according to your post, you emailed him just to see if he knew what he was doing. You then tossed an abbreviation that is common to YOU at him expecting him to know what it mans... I'm sure I could toss out a ton of abbreviations that are common knowledge for me because I deal with them daily and you wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about. When he replied with a clarification question, you scoffed at the idea of a snake owner not knowing what RI is. To the majority of the people in the United States, RI doesn't mean respiratory infection. In his eyes, you just asked if his snake had a Rhode Island...
