Don't use aluminum tape for the probe... it can throw off the readings as it is very conductive. Use electrical tape. Back heat or belly it makes no difference to the snakes. Belly is more efficient cost wise but back increases the ambient temps, in failure back is safer as it will not as likely to generate lethal temps. Personally I use belly heat but that is just the design of the rack I have a good friend uses back heat and has no issues I do run a backup t-stat where my friend does not feel this is necessary as the max temp obtainable is 99ºF I will easily reach 145ºF inside when the flexwatt in uncontrolled (it the t-stat fails) which is why I have a secondary t-stat.
