All of that sounds very similar, though I don't think he is loosing consciousness. I have noticed that he can't relax either. I have my visit with the vet scheduled for tomorrow. I just hope that it is diagnosable and treatable.

If you are using house carpet, could it have developed mold? Mold can be toxic and cause unpredictable results. Or maybe the chemicals in the carpet?

The "basic" kind of Carefresh says it uses "select soft woods"--but I can't figure out if that includes pine or cedar or not.
I've been using Carefresh for years, with various rodents and my burrowing snakes (hognose, a few corns, etc) - I'm allergic to aspen, so it's my only option for the critters who don't like newspaper/towels. It's never bothered the snakes, and considering I'm also allergic to cedar & pine, it's unlikely Carefresh contains either. What is it, though? I honestly have no idea, LOL.

P.S. Good luck (OP) at the vet, and please let us know what happens!
