What species are you looking into? I have dubias and have had turk roaches. I keep mine in dark rubbermaid totes with a square cut out of the lid and a piece of mesh screen hot glued to it for ventilation. They have egg cartons that stand vertically up so their waste falls to the bottom of the tub. They eat fruits and veggies and sometimes dog food and wheat bread and things like that. They have one heat pad but need another because most roaches produce faster in pretty warm temps.

I never went with a tank because I've had baby roaches climb up the glue in the corners.
babies will climb a tub just as fast as the corners of a tank.

Apply vasoline to the top corners of the tank and you won't have any problems using a tank.
