Where do you guys buy your Adult Breeder Rats?
I am getting sick of going to the store every weekend to buy live feeders. I am gonna do my own rack setup. Where do you guys buy your adult rats from? I dont want to buy weenlings and let them grow up. I need them ready to pound NOW! Petsmart? Petco?..... Someplace online? I dont need ASF or anything like that. Just regular Grey/White Rats...lol

I have To have a local Petstore order them for me. I don't think online can give you anything beyond frozen. But I may be wrong.

Re: Where do you guys buy your Adult Breeder Rats?
I found someone selling male rats locally for $5 a piece so I picked up two of them. I then bought two hooded females from PetSmart. I added a dumbo female and albino female later on. Both of them I got from Petco. You may be able to find someone on the site that is close by and willing to give you a good price on a starter colony though. I've added new blood here and there but have also held back females from large litters. I'm now up to 7 tubs of 1.4 ratio.

I would just keep looking and if you know anyone else in the hobby near you, ask them where they get theirs...or maybe they breed theirs and would be willing to part with a few..Personally I found a guy selling them for real cheap through someone else on this forum, I ended up getting 1.6 with 2 pregnant females for around $15. And out of those rats I've already gotten some blues and dumbos! lol.

I started of with rats from petsmart, petco and a local pet store selling reptiles (at the time I did not know anyone breeding rats so my choice was limited), took time to establish a strong healthy colony but it was worth it.
I never bought adults however, I have always bought small rats raising them up to breeding size simply because if you buy adults they might already too old too breed.
The best way to start a colony with good genes is to pickup a few animals from a local breeder.

I get all my rats from a local rat warehouse. Robert Gilliland over at the Hampton Mousery in Hampton, VA. www.hamptonmousery.com/
He makes mouse/rat deliveries all up and down the east coast.

I got my male at Petsmart who was the calmest rat ever, and I got my girls at PetCo. One was pretty much a wild rat and had horrible genes while the other was rather calm, had two small litters and took very good care of them, and then had a litter of 19, all of which were healthy.
