Ivermectin.....Good Or Bad?

I swear i would think most of you guys on this forum have stock in provent a mite or something, the way you guys swear by it...it really doesn't work all that great. yes it probably is the best thing on the market right now that is made specifically for treating snake mites but thats not saying much....black knight was a great product but thanks to pam and pam's lawyers its no longer available in california or most other states.

I hate to ask but do you use it properly or is your can possibly out dated? Its ALWAYS been "one shot, one kill" for me. Luckily I have only had to deal with mites a few times but each time it was 100% sucessful that's why I recommend it.

If one treatment isn't working, then re-treat. I've re-treated up to four times to be sure.

And I've never heard of mites "burrowing" into an animal.. They get in under the scales, yes, but I have sprayed a cage, put an animal back in there (after the 15 mins ) and literally watched the mites drop off. Mites so embedded in the under jaw that they were forcing scales up. 90% of the time, one treatment works, but for a heavy infestation treating several times, 1 week apart has worked very well for me.

The soak with the dish soap is the safest thing to get mites off the body of your animal. Mites cant breathe under water, the dish soap breaks the surface tension so the mites that dislodge from the body to breathe end up drowning because they don't float anymore.

No stock, I just prefer to stick with known good remedies.

A bit of background:
I rescued a dog nearly 10 years ago, a beautiful loving dobe. She was surrendered to a dobe friend, by horrible backyard breeders. She had demodectic mange (mites). The vet tried a number of the usual remedies, yet reluctant to try ivermectin due to the risks involved (disastrous to collies and some others). None of the traditional remedies worked, and she kept losing hair. After the appropriate tests, the vet tried ivermectin. It killed the mites amazingly quick, and her hair started growing back nearly immediately. To this day she is a great healthy dog, and no one would ever believe that she had mange as a puppy or even that she's a rescue.

So I offer this: If you have tried the traditional remedy (PAM), and it really doesn't work in this case, then ivermectin might be a viable option at the discretion of a competent herp vet. However please consult said competent herp vet prior to use.

i follow the instructions on the can and no its not out of date. i use it on a regular basis as a preventative, hence the name "provent a mite", so i allways have a fresh can on hand. the one and only time that i had a bad investation due to snakes i bought online from a well known breeder, the pam actually killed alot of them but not all. i still had live mites walking around just days after treating. i think the tiny mite problem im having now is due to thinking i had killed them all w/ pam before but obviously didn't. i read about the ivomec method in a book i have. the book says its safe as long as done properly. just desperate do kill all of the little bastards once and for all....
