I believe he said he is gonna be building it to a 1k shooter.
I wouldnt try to pull distance with any auto OR ported barrel.
Though, I bet I could make that thing shoot sub 6" at 1k
Also bet I could do it for under a grand, though I would have to use my own optics and it nice to not have to pay anyone for my smithing, just gotta buy myself a bottle of booze LOL

Look at the first post. He said he bought the VTR because the AR didn't shoot well enough out to 1000 yards. So, I took it as he was saying the VTR was an improvement to the AR. Not until later did he change to say he was now going to build it to become a 1000 yard shooter.

You seem to know a good bit about firearms and shooting. Do you honestly think that the VTR is a good platform for building a 1000 yard gun? Do you think that this would be an easy build or do you think there are 30 different guns you'd rather start with?

If this is the only gun he could afford, do you think he'll have the money to build this firearm into a 1000 yard shooter? What about the glass. A 1000 yard piece of glass is expensive.

Not even considering the Zeiss, but a decent scope is going for $800-$1200. There is of course the Shooter's Choice scope, which under ideal conditions can get the job done for $300-$400, but put some haze or early morning/late afternoon shooting and you would have wished you'd spent more money on that scope.

Yes I do think the VTR is a good platform for a 1000 yard gun. And it will cost me some money over time to get it ready. As of now I have 1600 into it. The scope I’m using now I chose for hunting. But I can see out to 1000 yards clearly. I have better than average eyesight and that helps. I'm in the process of shimming my mounts so i can turn the 600 yard ring into a 1000 yard ring.
Instead of calling me a liar and slandering me how about you just sit back and wait till I shoot this thing at the 1k range before judging everything I do.


Back on the second page where i posted the pic of me at work and you made fun of the way my eotech was mounted. The rail goes all the way under it. Its forward because the thermals also go with it. It was daytime and there was no need for thermals on the range lol.

How do you build a 1000 yard shooter from a hunting rifle? Build a better trigger? How about $300-$700. Free float the barrel? $100-$300. Even if it can be done. The shape of the barrel tends to make me think it would be difficult. Oh, then you have the barrel. The existing barrel is a hunting barrel, could not be made to work out to 1000 yards. It was never built for that kind of accuracy. Never happen. First the triangle barrel will cool more on the tips of the triangle, never allowing consistant shots. The dimension of the barrel will never allow for consistant shots. Not to mention the built in brake. If he changes the barrel, will he be able to find a barrel maker that can make this type of barrel with the proper twist rate? Maybe, but I bet you it would cost an arm and a leg.

After doing a little research because I have not kept up too much on the new firearms out there, that VTR would literally take next to nothing to build. If you have an armorer that has a "good" source. Its a 700 action, they have be hopped up for decades. I have enough stuff in my junk box to build 2 or 3 if I had some actions. That action is hard to beat and nothing was changed that makes anything "special" including the barrel. Stock and barrel are mates but not the action and barrel or stock.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. However it sounds like you all know a lot about guns!!

Instead of bickering back and forth and pride getting in the way ......why not all 3 of you work together to help each other and give ways to build out the gun staying within a budget. Who knows....as much as the 3 of you seem to know my husband could 1 day be buying a gun from your company. Hey ....crazier things have happened.

I just like to see everyone get along.....sing cumbiya....drink around the bonfire and hold hands. OK OK...maybe not the holding hangs part.

Not I................too much red tape now. Even though I was a licensed gunsmith, I cannot legally work on anyones firearms now because I dont have my own shop or work for a shop.

The 700 action is probably the action that offers the most after market add ons. Ok in light of Michelle's suggestion Here are a few things that I would get to up grade to start reaching the yardage you want..

#1 Match grade target weight 1:10 barrel NO muzzle break..You're not shooting a .338 or 416 so recoil management is done with a good shooting platform and proper body posture. No need to give up any of your bullet speed or kinetic energy to save a few pounds of felt recoil.

#2 get you and adjustable and consistent trigger. Knowing where on the release the trigger breaks is a good thing to know when shooting that far with repeatable accuracy

#3 get your gunsmith to put you a bigger bolt handle on the less you have to work to manipulate the action the less chance of altering your POI based on shooting position

#4 Cheek rest.. just get one trust me they work Proper stock weld is critical to seeing/holding a target at range and reproducing a comfortable accurate body posture.

#5 Ammo seems like people put thousands of dollars in to a weapon the go to walmart to buy ammo..Find someone who hand-loads ask around your gun shops. Buy the supply's (brass, powder ect), and use high BC lead, Moly coat if you have the chance.. and enjoy..

Personally, I would polish my own trigger and bolt but I like a little heavier trigger with a clean break. Stock and barrel have to go and I like pulling on the cheap side and letting my work show

I burned through some cheap winchester white boxes like it was going out of style for the break in. It's cheap and couldn't find the paper at 1000 yards lol. It falls short. Cleaned the heck out of it then used some federal premium gold. Set my BZO
at 200 then decided to hit the 1000 yard again. Was a perfect day with a wind value barely at 1. First 10 shots were low left with a .975 grouping. Ran the bore snake thought once then shout 1 fouler. Adjusted and the second group of 10 was 8.5 and the best i could get. Was a long day so we packet it up. Mental note. Bring extra batteries for the darn range finder lol.

Now that its all set up for long range i'm going to set up my video camera. I didn't want to use it for the initial shooting in case the gun preformed bad. Don't want to embarres myself hehe.

Now you did it! Got my salivating and thinking back to the numbers I just crunched the other day for my 1,000 yard shooter! Goes a little something like this, to the tune of .308 Winchester in 168 grain Federal Gold Match boat tails!

- A Stiller Precision TAC 30 action (amped up Remington 700 action with some tweaks that make it oh so sweet!)
- McMillan A5 adjustable stock
- A Lilja barrel with 1:12 rifling, cut to 20" total length with a recessed crown, stainless steel in a heavy "bull" configuration
- Jewell trigger
- Either a NightForce 4.5-14x50mm variable power with illuminated recticle mil-dots OR a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50mm variable, again with the illuminated mil-dots recticle.

I hear ya', Pit, on the red tape and Uncle Sam taking care of all the wrong things! I'd LOVE to get into gunsmithing but in the meantime I'm going to buy the pieces and have it built. Then, away I'll go, ghillie suit and WAR FACE! at the ready, lmao!

Excellent choice in make/model, Darkice and a fine platform on which to build. A good friend of mine is an observer/sniper, both by military training as well as being a cop on our local Special Response Team. He shoots a Remington 700 that's pretty much factory and has consistently made 1,000 yard shots, for any naysayers that doubt that rifle's abilities.
