Re: Am I close to a lock? Need opinions!!

I have 1.1 poss het Axanthics that will more than likely be ready next season. So of course I have started to do a little bit of research, and this is the first time I have heard of the scenting thing. I will check into it a bit more, but I wanted to say thanks for the info. I'll take all the helpfull info I can get.

Females do not always "scent". I have plenty of females that have laid many years in a row, and never made a mess in the tub, or even tail wagged for that matter. Also, sometimes all of the mess in the tub (i.e. "scenting") is deposited by the male.

In regards to your picture, while that could be promising, it could also be that the male hasn't figured it out yet, or that the female is rejecting him, and not allowing him access. Another thing to look for, would be his tail actually touching the side of her (with the underside of his tail touching the side of her tail). In this position, he is actually stimulating her with his spurs, and trying to convince her to let him breed. If you see this activity, I would be more inclined to say the breeding was close.

    Hope that helps,

    The tail waggle, female scenting:

I've only been pairing one this year, but she always does this. One time she got so excited she smacked my male in the face. Did not get a lock for a few days that time But, have had one every other time! Yay for breeding season!

So lets say she does scent the tub and all over the male? After there done with the lock will you then clean off the male and if so how? I have never heard of this and am curious to know?

yeah exactly. basically after they separated I just cleaned off the male with a paper towel soaked in warm water and just cleaned out the tank like I normally would.
