In response to your thread though... I'm guessing it might be hard to get anything done this weekend considering that today is Christmas Eve. If you can get anyone to look at your snake and get some meds that would be best, but depending where you live it might be a long drive to get to a 24/hr vet. If you can get the vet to call you back you can just ask to pick up the meds, it will most likely be an injection. Also, raise your temps in the enclosure, I would say 92 93 if you can do it. That will help dry out the air and keep him going till Monday if you have to wait that long.

Your post has the "RE:...." and I didn't get it fixed fast enough to take the asterisks out so when you replied it had his original thread name was at the top of your post. I just had to go through and fix all that so I didn't have to delete the thread. You would get a message from us if you did anything I'll see if I can go through and edit the reason for editing to make it more clear.

I doubt the vet would just hand me the meds but if they would then that is fine, there was a very good video by Ralph Davis on how to do a Baytril injection. Unfortunately the vet I would be seeing is only in Mon-Thur but he is VERY highly recommended.

Good, then you now exactly what is going to happen! There are few vets that will let you get he meds, so you're probably right. Lucky for me I live in a pretty rural area and can pick up meds for just about anything, even puppies, which I don't really agree with. The last time the vet actually gave our horses their yearly shots was the very first time almost 7 years ago! He even gives us mild tranqs and shots to put the mares into heat...kind of scary thinking about all the people who could have horse tanqs in their fridge... I'm one of them
Good luck though! Just keep those temps up!

I just checked on her again and the temp is around 88 ambient and 92 hot so I think that it's ok for now. I checked her throat again and no sign of bubbles or mucus this time, but she did sound like she wheezed for a second. >< This is so nerve racking, and I just can't figure out how the hell she got RI in the first place. Everything has been fine as far as I know.....I must have overlooked something.

Hmm, it's fairly common when breeding, even if you have everything perfect and your temps don't drop very low it still somehow happens. I'm not sure how common it is when you aren't breeding, if you have everything perfect. I'm guessing she just started the RI since you don't see much. Wheezing is a definite sign though. Do you know how cold your cool side gets? A good friend of mine got an RI at 75 degrees. It's not terribly low, but maybe if their immune system is already down for some reason, it's easy for them to get RI at that temp.

I don't yet have a thermometer for the cool side, I know that my hotspot never dips below 88 and my ambient is always above 84. So if I had to guess then the cool side might be 79 -80 but I have no real way of telling.
Btw BPs do yawn and sigh occasionally right? I have seen Hera yawn on several occasions after we got her and when she is around my neck I can sometimes hear her sigh. It sounds like a forceful exhale, I had heard that both of those are signs of RI BUT sometimes BPs do those things for the hell of it.

From my experience with the two RIs I've had in my collection. One due to cooling and the other came to me as a rescue really bad. You will certainly know an RI when they are very bad off. Pretty much once the snake gets mucusy they start coughing and trying to spit the yucky stuff out. When it's not to terrible it will sound like a crackle or a pop everytime they breathe. At that point you may be able to raise the temps a bit and avoid any further problems. But when they are really bad off they will certainly need antibiotics and beleive me it sounds so awful when they are that wheezy there's no mistaking it. Both got over them really quickly though which was very releiving bc I felt really awful when the rescued girl was just coughing and coughing and we had to wait a weekend to see the vet. Hope this helps.
