HD and Lowes should have 3/4, that is all they carry to my knowledge. But 1/2 should work.
Make sure to look into heating before you build and factor that in as well as there are a LOT of DIY rack setups in the DIY and caging section if you need any inspiration.

Hey, I actually found 3/4 inch at HD and for heat I'm goin with 4 inch belly heat on a Herpstat.
