If compromises are possible I've seen a Toshiba at BB that's a 17" with 4gb Ram and 500gb storage for $600. No Blu Ray and no backlit keyboard.
They also have a Dell with a 17" and 640gb storage 6gb memory and i5 processor and Blu ray along with 4G Wimax capabilities for $880 which is pretty good considering specs.
