I was looking at one of the caging threads and notice that it was ill advised to use wood, because the urine would essentially stain the wood. I've been using a wood cage for 4-5 years. My BP will go under the substrate from time to time to get closer to the UTH. I'm fairly positive this is the issue, he's been peeing directly on the wood for years.

Looks like it's time to build a new cage then, a non wood cage. Any ideas on materials? P.S I'd like to reuse the plexiglas I have if at all possible.

today at the pet shop i go to i saw that they keep incense or watever its called burning in their mouse and rat room to keep smells down and i think thatd be a pretty good idea

This is actually a really bad idea. Rats especially have VERY sensitive respiratory systems and constantly breathing in incense could be bad for their lungs.

I know I can't stand the smell of incense for even a few minutes.

With rodents you need ventilation and airflow and cleaning, not a smell bandaid.

I have actually having a similar issue sort of I have been using vision enclosures and have had no small at all. Two weeks ago I rescued 8 ball pythons and a rack. I have cleaned the bloody thing to an inch of its life the rack actually has no smell but the tubs... and they are old discontinued rubbermaids...
