They do look like heat pits and they're in the same spot on both sides. BG didn't read the whole thread(lazy), but what is the full history of this snake. Maybe this is evolution. Who knows? All snakes from this part of Africa may be developing them for some odd reason.
To be honest girl. You should call some scientists(geeks)that study this kind of thing. BG is sure they'd be interested.
