Last Fall, we lost our little ferret, Lilly. She was so sweet and loving. We are not sure what killed her, but we also lost Zeke, another ferret, soon after. We found Lilly laying in the bottom of the cage, barely alive. She was so thin. She had been losing weight for a while, and even with additional feedings, she wasn't gaining anything. She had been small to start out with, so the day of her passing, she weighed less than a lb. We scooped her up and I was in tears. We called our normal vet and they said they couldn't see her that day. It was an emergency, but they couldn't fit her into their schedule (We don't go to them anymore). So we rushed to the emergency vet downtown, but the exotic vet wasn't there. So then we went to the vet down the street, but their exotic vet wasn't in. They called another vet for us and we rushed her there. They got some fluids in her but we got the call the next morning that she had passed. We were devastated. I felt like a little piece of my heart was missing that day. It still hurts to think about her.
All the vet could say was that it was a virus of some kind but just in case it was bacterial, she put the remaining 3 on an antibiotic. The 3 are doing fine and have gained a ton of weight (everyone had been losing weight) since then. (They went from eating a mere 1oz each per meal, as that was all they could stomach to eat to eating 2-3oz per day!)
I will always remember Lilly and I know her brothers and sister miss her a lot. It is just not the same not seeing 4 ferrets cramming into the same hammock.
Congrats on finding your girl!
