Raised rats and mice for a number of years and never heard of such, but thats not to say it hasn't happened..My suggestion would be to pick up a no pest strip..One of them yellow things impregnated with toxic pesticide..
But read the warning as they are a carcenogenic and hazardous to YOUR health as well as the bugs..

    mites can't live on rats

did alot of reading, seems the best thing to do is just give them all baths when i clean their cage, i just broke into a new bag of bedding so hopefully that will do the trick

    mites can live of rats...

it is one of the ways snakes end up with mites. They get carried on their food.

rats can get mites basically close to head lice.

Actually that is incorrect. Mites are a very species specific pest. Snake mites do not live on rodents. There are some mites that DO infest rodents, but they in turn will not be attracted to reptiles. When snake mites hatch, they will wander quite far to find a host to feed off of. When they've sucked enough of your snakes blood, they'll drop off and do a bit more wandering to find a very tight crack to lay their eggs in which isn't likely to be any other kind of animal. You're far more likely to get snake mites from the paper bag used to carry your frozen food home from the pet store.

For fleas on rats and mice, it's best to use a flea spray formulated for cats. Since cats lick themselves like rats and mice do, they need to use a flea remedy that isn't toxic when ingested by the animal being treated.

    Re: Fleas....

    I was apparently unclear......

I meant to say mites(reptile) can live ON rats. This does not mean they are feeding on the rats. They basically are using them for transportation of sorts.

And also as stated, there are mites that do live off of/on rats. Hence why I asked if they were mites or fleas.

Mites are easily killed, fleas are not.

Fleas will avoid anything that eats a good bit of garlic. Mites can be killed using preventamite or using a low dose(really watered down)of "RID" does the trick also if applied to their environment..

I wouldn't recommend using any type of of flea spray if you are unclear of what you are dealing with.

    fleas are tough creatures....

    Re: Fleas....

    Theres fleas Tim

There is a couple here in Kansas City that breed rats, and sells to a lot of the local stores.

I have bought rats directly from them in the past and they were flea infested.

Bought from stores they sold to and it was the same deal, its disgusting.
