The food size aside, every animal is different. We have LOTS of animals in our care. Some never hide, some hide under their hide, others under the substrate, some like to dump their water bowl others never touch it. It sounds like your animal is well adjusted. He isn't cruising his enclosure or being restless, he is just hanging out based on your description. Sounds like he feels safe with his surroundings.
