Humidity Solved

Everyone always has a question regarding humidity. And there are various different ways to keep humidity up. The average humidity within the tank can be between 50-70%, and as for shedding the humidity should be around 80% (Typically for Ball Pythons). Different reptiles require different percentages, thus this article should only be used as a basis and not purely on Ball Pythons. This article is to aid in helping some fix their humidity issues.

-The first method of increasing humidity is to us an ultrasonic humidifier. This can help tremendously if you are using aspen or other dry substrates, like repti-carpet, etc. First off you will need an “ultrasonic” humidifier, anything else like a steam humidifier will not work. The ultrasonic humidifiers create a fog/mist as opposed to the other types of humidifiers. After purchasing the humidifier, go to your local Home Depot/Lowes and purchase “vacuum” tubing and duct tape. Configure the tubing and humidifier together. I bought a restraint to hold the tubing to the screen for 96 cents at Lowes. I then used duct tape to harness the restraint to the cage. After everything is attached, you will need a timer, you can get one at Wal-Mart for 6 dollars. Set the timer to have the humidifier turn on 2 times every day for 15 minutes each. This does raise the humidity tremendously, especially if you follow the duct tape screen method, because this will trap a good amount of humidity inside the terrarium. Check under the DIY section and look at the sticky threads at the top of the section. This also prevents the use of misting the cage every day, also excessive misting can cause soaking, eventually causing mold. Some people find that misting does not work right away or at all for that matter. The humidifier method is not meant to be used on a continuous cycle, because too much humidity, and or breathing of the mist/fog from the snake may cause the snake to have respiratory infection. The perfect example of this method is the repti-fogger. I suggest purchasing an actual ultrasonic humidifier, due to it being sturdier and well built. Both are around the same price.









-“The perfect combo” method as I like call it, is actually very simple and easy to obtain. This is comprised of repti-bark; the duct tape method, and heat lamps. I have found even for those who live in dry, low-humid areas, this method works. My secret though, is to freeze the bag of repti-bark for 24 hours before use. What this does is freeze the bark and moisture inside the bag. This also kills mites and/or bacteria that may be present (likely from a cut bag), though this should not be likely. Remove the bag, and let sit till the entire bag is at room temperature, this normally takes about 12-24 hours. This now has created more moisture throughout the entire bag, as opposed to just the center of the bag when bought from the store. Apply the repti-bark inside the terrarium, set up the terrarium, apply the duct tape method to the screen top, and apply heat lamps, and your humidity will be up in no time.

Oh wow, that's one way to do it! Does that humidifier have a low setting so the humidity doesn't get crazy in there? We have one sort of like that one, but even the low setting is comparable to a rain forest.

The lowest setting on this particular model takes a while to humidify the tank, so leaving it on 15 minutes at a time twice a day, works perfect.
