When was his last shed? I Didn't see that on the OP, are its eyes cloudy or does it have a pink belly.

i have also heard that they can go into a bitting phase were they will bite alot but if u just let him go they will calm down my cuz just let his bite him till he realized it didnt bother him and the snake grew out of it

I assume you frightened him by going in the enclosure too fast, that will do it sometimes.

My Spider hissed at me last night for being too quick, but he was fine afterwards.

In the little time I've kept Ball pythons (I have 4 right now and only kept them about 2 years) I have never had any of my Ball pythons go through a biting phase.

Most Jungle Carpet pythons and other carpet pythons will go through a nippy phase when they are smaller but eventually grow out of it with or without handling.

I have had my snakes lash out at me multiple times, mostly because i come at them too fast or they are asleep and i wake them. In three years or so of keeping bp's i have yet to be bit, which i guess i am lucky for. For me what has always worked is to make sure my snake i am near them and that i am about to pick them up, also to fed them on a schedule and feed appropriate sized prey items. Also have found that after my snake strikes at me it usualy doesn't help to touch it with something, best to just let them settle for a few minutes. Not to sure if my post is helpful, just thought i would throw it out there

ive heard that leaving a snake alone when it strikes, will only teach it that it can strike to get left alone. but i've also heard that if their setup isnt right or if something is off a bit like temps they can get stressed pretty easily.
you never said what your using to monitor your temps? your not using those dial thingies are you? i have heard those things are notoriously inaccurate.

I feel mutual on this one. If he strikes at you hurry up and grab that arse scold him. I tell all my animals like this "Your my pet!".

Thanks everyone! He's completely docile today. If it happens again I will definitely be coming back to this thread-- I do believe at this point that I just startled him awake.

Lately his feeding schedule has been a bit inconsistent, and now I believe his prey is too small, so I'll be changing that up.

If it happens again I will show him who's boss. Now that it has happened once I won't be so shocked next time, heh.
