Need Help ASAP Possible RI not sure

Hello all, I just bought off craigs list for an awesome deal (350.00) a black pewter. I picked him up Friday and have had him in quarantine since then. I looked him over quite well and seemed to be in good health (no visable mite, weight and size looked good). I have had/seen snakes with RI before and he showed no signs like labored breathing, bubbles, crackling or sounds when I put him up to my ear and listen, open mouth etc.

The persone who sold him to me said he hasnt eaten in 2 weeks (he's about 240g) so I decieded to feed him on my other snakes feeding schedule which is today sunday. I took him out just to handle him since he's been put away and after about 10min he started to drool quite a bit. Very clear not foamy, and I would say about 2 table spoons before I put him away. I put him back up to my ear and no sounds coming from him and his mouth is not open, no labored breathing, no signs Im used to for seeing RI.

I'm very worried and done want this to turn bad. What could this be? I have never seen anything like this. I have 12 snakes and never seen any of them like this. My first responce is RI but Im hoping for better. Any help is appreciated. Since It's Sunday I cant take him to the vet till tomorrow if I have to. I guess if its too good to be true,, most of the time it is..

    Thanks in advance!

Unhappy Re: Need Help ASAP Possible RI not sure

It sounds like a respiratory infection to me Raise the temperatures, and lower the humidity, see if that helps at all. If it gets worse, there may need to be a phone call to a veterinarian's office

    Was it liquidy or mucousy?

Sometimes if the snake has recently had something to drink, some will just fall out of the mouth.

Re: Need Help ASAP Possible RI not sure

Thats what ive done so far since I have a little experience with RI. But I have never seen a snake all of the sudden almost vomit-like clear liquid and quite a bit of it. What Im used to seeing with RI is mouth slightly open, wet or foamy around the mouth labored breathing and makeing sounds while breathing. He isnt showing any of these signs.

The guy I bough him from seems to know what he was talking about when it comes to snakes. Plus he wasnt a kid (about 35) and a state trooper. Not that ANY of those things makes him an expert! Just hopefully a little more responceable!!

Not really, Just very clear, and kinda like our siliva. Just came out all of the sudden almost like he vomited it up.

was it bubbly at all? Did he open his mouth when the liquid came out?

I am going to go out on a limb and say it isn't an RI.

I have to agree with Steffe on this one. No other signs and it was clear. I bet he just took a long drink and you disturbed him by taking him out. They dont drink often and when they do they will take a very long drink. You took him out and his drink probably just came back out. Watch him closely for a couple weeks. If you see or hear no other signs he is fine. Have you looked in his mouth? Its very easy to open the mouth. Hold him firmly behind the head. Just grab the loose skin under the jaws between your fingers and gently pull down. You wont tear anything or hurt the snake. If the mouth is clean and a light powder pink with no bubbles, streaks or discoloration, he is most likely fine.

It was probably just water then. Drool will be a little bubbly, and there wouldn't just be a random stream of it. You would probably notice other symptoms by the time it got to the drooly phase.

Re: Need Help ASAP Possible RI not sure

Just looked at him again and his mouth, and he seems fine,, just the way he did when i got him. But like I said I put him away for a couple days to chill out and get used to being somewhere else, so I was thinking I may have missed something an d was freaking out!

Thanks for all the input and please keep the knowledge coming!
