I myself never go by ratios with vermiculite because you never know how dry or damp the vermiculite is when you go to use it. The general rule of thumb is add water so it clumps, feels damp, but no water drips out when you squeeze it in your fist. When you have done a few it is very easy to determine. I have seen vermiculite on pallets that has been exposed to rain and sun and whatever so I think going by feel is your best bet as you never know how wet or bone dry it already is? The test is always squeeze in fist and have no drips and have it clump. I always use vermiculite and have never had any problems

I have had mold on dead or unfertilized eggs which doesnt hurt the others but drives my allergies a bit crazy so cleaning it is nice.
