okay for substrate you need to put in cypress mulch, aspen, paper towel, newspaper those are the best pick any one of them

he needs 2 caves to hide identical you can go to the dollar store buy 2 bowls cut a hole in the side so he can hide in them. make sure to make the edges smooth so he does not cut himself and because he owns plenty of snakes he still should know when he fed it last but thats not your fault he's just being dumb, you can also go to the dollar store and buy a mister just mist the substrate not the snake lol a bit you will need something to measure the humidity and temps i suggest the accurite you can buy it at walmart for like $12 it will measure the temp where the heat pad is with the probe
the humidity and the ambient air which is the air in the tank with the device itself it is quite easy to use.

    Good Luck

    Re: Ball Python help!

If the snake doesn't feed when you first offer, then just wait until the next week. Not feeding in ball pythons isn't a huge deal, and trying to feed too often will stress them out more than not feeding enough.
Just 0.1 normal BP, 1.0 mojave, 0.1 California King, 0.1 Saharan sand boa, ~20 hermit crabs, a Patriot crab, 5.0 rats, and a herd of mice and ASFs

    Re: Ball Python help!

I wouldn't feed it yet. You just bought it and it doesn't have a proper set up yet.
Wait until you get some substrate (paper towel at the least), hides, undertank heater with a thermostat and a digital thermometer to measure the temp. Once you get all that and set it up, leave the snake alone for a week. No handling, just water changes. Then try feeding it. Once you feed it, do not handle it for at least two days while it digests.

Does the person you bought the snake for have any experience? If not, it is good that you are learning all this so that you can help your friend with their new pet.

    Re: Ball Python help!

Don't feed the snake until you have the enclosure heated properly. If it isn't heated properly, the prey item will just rot in the belly of the snake.

Sounds like you have gotten some pretty good directions so far. Just to sum it up, here is a little shopping list:

2 cereal bowls from the dollar store for hides
paper towels or newspaper for substrate
    Under tank heater (UTH)
Reptile thermostat (reptitemp 500r is the cheapest but hard to find in stores, ordering online is a good alternative)
Thermometers/Hygrometer (accurite weather station from home depot, lowes, or walmart)
15qt tub if you want to use one instead of a tank. Then you will never have humidity problems.
