    New Additions

Well I decided to do it, I'm not quite sure why but I did. I got two Colubrids from petsmart today.

One was a striped california king I have been calling ceaser. I really felt bonded with this one, it seemed to have a good demeanor and a little courage I guess. Went right in and hid.

The other is a Apricot Pueblan Milksnake "bullet" who is going into a shed I am pretty sure because it's eyes were blued over. In retrospect I wish I had checked to see if they were stuck eyecaps but they didn't seem thick. I bought it because I loved it's colors and I had done some research on them both last night. While "Ceaser" Seems kinda chill this snake is insane. Maybe it's just the stress of the car ride and the new home and the shedding. But this little one was striking at the cup, racing around and all around acting nutty. Still it seemed healthy, I spent awhile talking with the people and looking over the feeding records. It didn't feel like hiding, just semi burrowed in the back corner. I don't mind if it stays fiesty, I'm just curious how it will behave after the shed.

It'll be my first shed since I got back into snakes so I am more than abit nervous there. Pondered adding a humid hide but these are desert snakes with no real humidity requirement and it has a bowl it can soak in.

I'd like to get them both sexed after they settle in. And I hoped to have pictures but they turned out poorly and I really don't wanna drag them out again and get them riled up. So Pics of Ceaser after the Acclimation, and pics of Bullet after the shed and acclimation whichever is longest.

I covered the front glass with a trashbag, and covered up the back vents with plastic wrap. (Hot spot was like 80-82. Hoping to bump that up 3 or 4 degrees) And I bumped up the thermostat a tiny bit.

In the meantime I juuuuust uploaded another very terrible video. Watch at your own risk. I'll post it when it's up.

    Re: New Additions

My milksnakes are far more "flighty" than my kingsnakes. I enjoy handling the kingsnakes more than the milks by far.

Congrats on your new additions - we require pictures!

Flighty is certainly the best word for the new milk. I feel so bad for this little one because it seems scared out of it's gourd. I am just gonna leave this little one totally alone and hope it calms abit.

Any special tips on Sheds robin?

Bad pics incoming! Best I could do.

    Re: New Additions

No tips really on sheds - as you know, mine are kept in tubs - I don't do anything different during shed as when they are out of shed. I'd say humidity stays about 50% at all times.

I see well hopefully I'll get a one piece eye caps and all.

I wonder what color the musk is because the milk did release a brownish fluid on me.

That's musk - they'll also fling liquid urates at you too. You got to hold Skittles and see how calm he was - he used to musk me as a baby. I'd generally just get a paper towel ready when I took him out and gently hold that vent area in the paper towel until he was done musking, then handle him for about 10 minutes. One day, he just didn't musk and hasn't done so ever since.

The reason I go ahead and handle after the musk is that I don't want them to feel that the musking actually keeps me from handling them. I keep the handling session as positive as possible, allowing them to move around without too much restriction, so that they don't feel I'm also a predator.

I have two baby albino cali kings - one who musks (but is doing it less frequently) and one who has never musked me - and she's younger. Pretty unusual, but it certainly endears me to her fearless personality.

And the Imperial will musk if I move too quickly - he's definitely inherited more of the kingsnake personality, rather than the pueblan milk personality (I also have a demon pueblan milk! LOL).

    LOL

Yeah skittles was awesome I had tons of fun with him, the two times I handled ceaser he was great, totally calm but enamored with my shirt.

Bullet is...Well I'm eager to work with bullet . I like that name because that snake will DART. and it struck it's container like four times a few rapid fire.

I'd like to get them sexed in a month or so. Someday Maybe I could make my own imperials...if I could figure out how to make them not eat each other.

    Re: New Additions

The water bowls should be plenty of humidity for your new colubrids. I don't think I've ever had to spray one down in tanks or tubs (and it's just a little bit dry here in Phoenix ).

    Re: New Additions

    Hey everybody just a question.

Ambients is low 70's but hot spot seems to be steady 80-83.

Should I bump the thermostat up more or is that good?

Is 90 better to shoot for?
