The string and brick thing is a bad idea all round I think. The rat could eat through the sting in zero seconds flat so all you would do is have two animals loose instead of one.

You could put the live rat in a cage with a heated hidebox nearby. Actually having him eat the rat and then go hide and not move for a couple of days would probably make it harder to find him.
