    Re: They Hatched

I went at my first clutch with a chainsaw. Got super happy, and had a really big pair of SCISSORS!!!

One of the breeders that I know well (and whose opinion I value) told me to not do that, he could see I was cutting around the blood vessels, but that the minute you expose it to the air it starts to form bacteria, and by the time the snake leaves the egg it is swimming in a bacterial soup.

And yep, sure enough, it turns to sludge very fast.

I snip, I lift, I peek, I photo, and I place the flap down now.

    Hi,

My name is Del and I'm a serial egg-cutter.

I took Kara's advice to Robin to heart and spray into the the eggs a little with water every day at least once after I cut them - it can help flush out the gunk if you see it forming I think.

    Question Enlighten me please

Why do you cut the eggs at all? wouldn't they make their way out on their own like they do in the wild??? I know nothing about breeding snakes and am wondering, it seems strange and unnatural to me.

It's because some babies aren't strong enough or they didn't develope their 'egg tooth'. The same thing happens with poultry-which I am much more familar with. Some people think they should die if they can't get out on their own, others think that if all they need is a little help and all you have to do is make a small slit' why let them die? I'm with the latter.

It's not anything about the money in my opinion. Some of the poultry I hatch is worth money, but most are chickens and turkies for food and are only worth a dollar or two when they are babies. If they just need a little hole so they don't drown I don't see the issue in that. At least with snakes you can't hear them churping then eventually choking and dying in an unopened egg it's heart breaking and I don't see any other option than helping.
