Sam is right. In order for the 3D to work, you'll need a tv that runs AT LEAST at 240mhz. The reason being that it is basically "flicking" between 2 different images in order to create the 3D effect. So the tv needs to "refresh" very quickly to do this... On top of that, you'll still need the glasses AND the 3D blu ray player.

HOWEVER, 3D has been around for the consumer for many years now. They've made children's movies in 3D for at least a decade and I'm 99.9% sure those folks didn't have a state of the art 3D tv and 3D blu ray player since they weren't even out yet!!

So it'll be interesting to see if Avatar 3D will NEED the special 3D blu ray player...
Correct, 3D isn't new by any means, but the current gen 3D stuff all require certain quipment to run properly. I personally think it is a load of crap. I can see the TV needs, but the player and even surround has to be certified. Ridiculous rules only put in place to make you buy new stuff.

Personally I think it would be kinda stupid for them to give us 3D technology to use in our living room. Most people just download their movies instead of go to the theater or rent, 3D in theaters gives people a REASON to go to the theater instead of just downloading it. Technology problems like special tvs aside, if they descide to release dvds that allow you to see the movie in 3D, people will just learn how to download those too.

I agree with the downloading... Someone will eventually upload an "Avatar 3D" copy and if it's good enough, I will work. The limiting factor then will be the user's video card on the computer. I doubt it will be nearly as good as the theaters but it will still have some of the effects.

I was talking to this home theater owner who we worked with for a while and he was saying that 3D WILL work perfectly fine and great with these new 3D generation televisions, but the only problem is that 3D is a MUCH MORE fulfilling experience on a SUPER large tv rather than like a 40". Something to think about...

People were saying that when VCR's first hit the consumer market. Everyone said it would be the death of the theater because everyone would just wait and rent/buy the movie on tape. But no...people still spent billions of dollars going to the movies the old fashioned way....no 3D needed, either.

Personally I thought the movie was very meh, It was nice to look at but I felt that the humans were not very believable characters. And the eco message was forced. I hate "green" movies. This again was just one man's opinion. Not my cup of tea.

The catgirls were pretty attractive though.
