hide or no hide...

ok here we go.

since ive changed from tanks to racks i have had a certain question on my mind, should i still continue to keep hides in the snakes enclosure even though there cage is practicaly one big hide? now before i get bashed with " snakes must have hides or your not properly containing them!!!", i have noticed from watching videos of big breeders and small breeders that it seems to me almost non of them keep hides in there rack systems for the snakes. instead of using the hides, the snakes will burrow under the subtrate either it be newpaper, aspen, or whatever...

now i guess what the main question is, do you (whomever "you" may be) use hides, and do you see a benefit or a drawback from the use or non use of them? please do state whether you use them or not and your feedback.

I give all my snakes one hide in the tub. They do just fine and they would probably be fine without the hides but I keep them in there because they use them.

i'm half and half on it some of mine i dont have hides and they do just fine. and the other half i have hides.

If I take the hides out and they go off food they tend to get them back.

If they keep eating and don't seem bothered I regard it as one less thing to wash and leave it out.

It's worth noting tht one of the ones with two hides still occasionally decides to hide under the paper instead.

I think a lot of it might depend on how big your tubs are in relation to the snakes size and if it is opaque or clear.

None of my snakes have hides and they all do fine. I only use hides for the babies but as soon as they are big enough the hides go away and they all still eat fine.

I have recently switched to racks and still have hides for my snakes....they seem to like it like that. Some use them....some stretch out and dont.

Haven't ever used a hide in a rack and haven't ever had a problem feeder because of it. A few like to hide under the paper, but most don't.

the only one right now with a hide in my small collection is Fiesty, the new baby pastel all others don't have one but like Derek mentioned if one goes off feed then I'll provide them with one. So far so good.

Big Gunns has given this lesson, and now he'll give it again. If you have a rack, BG suggests no hides. If the snake is a problem feeder you may want to give it one, but don't do it otherwise.

Here's the problem. A snake with a hide is more likely to be a shy snake. Breeders that use hides with their snakes, invariably have feeding problems when they sell their snakes to someone else. If the person doesn't use a hide, the snake may not eat. BG knows a big breeder with this problem, but he'll never change.

If you buy a baby ball, don't use a hide. A tank set up is a leeetle different, but BG still hates hides. Tree branches and other places to hide are better. BG suggestions for hides is this......only use them when a snake is a finicky eater.
