My kids go to schools that only have acedemic greek houses.
Loyola University in Maryland (formerly Loyola College) and Embry Riddle Aeronauctical University.

I never joined, didn't see a reason to join. Just my personal opinion.

fraternities and sororities are mainly for buying friends and under age drinking and drug use.

It is usually the people who are not in them and who have never experienced them that talk bad about them.
The same principal applies to those who keep snakes and those who don't. Those who don't usually keep snakes think the reptile keepers are crazy.

I had a lot of friend outside of the fraternity during college -- maybe even more than within the fraternity. I didn't feel I was "buying" friends, as it was more of a way to get guys with the same ideals and values in one place. As many others stated, I knew many of the guys before I even pledged.

Plus, we didn't look down upon non-fraternity members -- we always had "independents" hanging out with us and always welcomed them.

As far as underage drinking -- really? I'm pretty sure there is tons of that going on in the dorms and at house parties that are non-fraternity related. If anything, our house was safer than any other party. I don't know what other fraternity parties were like, but at ours we didn't allow underage drinking. We hired professional security services, they checked id's of all people coming to the parties, and issued wristbands to "of age" attendees. If someone was caught drinking without a wristband they were asked to leave.

And as far as drugs -- our house had zero tolerance for drugs.

Oh, and BTW -- Theta Chi - Phi Chapter!
