I've wondered the same. The antaresia pythons are bulletproof in terms of forgiveness of husbandry mistakes, are easy to handle and are more interactive than your average boid. They also stay a manageable size and subsequently don't take up a great deal of space.
In this day and age. I guess the lack of color morphs has hurt them. Corn snakes and ball pythons come in innumerable colors and patterns. Stimson's have a wide variability in color and pattern but it tends to be a variance of the same degree - no where near what you can get in a ball or a corn or even in a gopher snake.
