Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time for this little guy. I'd wait a week and leave a rat pup in with him overnight. Also, I agree with West Coast Jungle on the 5 day feeding schedule. You don't want to give him too much after being underfed for so long. Also, I didn't see anyone else say this, but I wouldn't handle him or mess with him at all until he's eaten for you a few times. Good on you for taking him in! Hope he does well for you!

Great job on the rescue! I'm sure the store would have been no help tp the little guy. I don't understand though why people get snakes before really knowing if they want it or not. Idiots like that ladies son should be kept away from all pets!

Re: just rescued a ball python..help

ok 5 day schedule, im going to start him on rat pups and go from there, i know, i couldn't believe how she could just leave him like that, regardless she should've taking the time of at least finding him an appropiate home, who knows how he was living, if he had anywhere to hide, yesterday was really good, i expected him to just be hiding away all day/night but she was actually very active exploring his tub, he had stuck pieces of bad shedding under his belly and he went in the water then rubbed up agains that wood hide thingy and it came off, and all night he kept going from hiding to exploring, the temps are all good, the hot side is 93 and the cold side is 77, the only problem im having is with humidity cause im in florida and the humidity here is crazzyyyy...so when im in the room im having to take off the tub's top and let the humidity evaporate a little, im juts glad i got him and not some toddler who saw it undermarked at the petstore and whose parents thought it was "cute", ugh, people should really thing of what having a snake means before buying it and realizing its not just putting it in a cage with a mouse

I wanted to say something yesterday about his big water bowl, but I thought maybe the humidity up north in Florida isn't so bad as down here. But I guess it is. I use 4 inch ceramic water bowls because of the humidity. It helps A LOT. Humidity in their tubs stays around 50-70%. Depending if it's raining or not, cleaned the tubs, etc etc...

The extra activity you are noticing is normal for a new ball python. He is just checking out his new digs, looking for a way out, and deciding wether or not this is a safe place for him to live. It will probably take him about a week to get fully adjusted. During this time it would be best to not handle him and not feed him.

It doesn't matter if they are ceramic or not, it's the size that matters.

more precisely, its the diameter of the bowl that matters. Less water surface area to evaporate, less evaporation.
