Yo do in my county as well. "any constrictor-type snake" is how it's worded, which includes balls. The regulations will be different according to where you are, but I know I have to have proof of where i received them, proof that they were imported legally or bred in the country, $50,000 in liability insurance, a statement from the vet that they're healthy, proof that they have adequate housing, etc etc.

Needless to say, I'm still getting to all of that...

Look up Animal Control for your area. They're the ones I have to register with here.

Not to dig up a somewhat old thread, but in Gloucester, Va you need a permit and all that crap to have a ball python? I live in Richmond, Va. I'm pretty sure we don't need ANY of that. That is just nuts. Liability insurance? Really? Why? In case your ball python gets out and bites someone. If that is the case then why don't dog owners have to have the same thing? And cat owners? What about bird owners. It is just stupid. Rah! Remind me never to move there.

A moderator on this site gave me an infraction because i spoke about getting a ball python in NY.

They said its "illigel" to own a ball python.

But when i call"d my county they said as long as the snake is non venomous and under 7 feet i could keep it in NYC.

Another place to find out if permits are required and where to get one is your local pet shop that sells snakes. They are required by law to give the purchaser the paperwork for the permit when a snake is purchased.

Dogs and cats must be licensed as well. And yes, most homeowners insurance policies include pet liability, which covers dog and cat bites (but usually excludes exotics and sometimes certain breeds of dogs). I'm not positive if it's a requirement for licensure, but it's actually a pretty good idea to carry.

Anything with teeth can bite.

I don't have any licenses for any of my animals. I also do not have homeowners insurance as I don't own a home.

I live in New Jersey too, to get a permit for any exotic animal, you need to call the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife. The number for them is 908-735-5450 which is way easier than their website, and they will email you the application for the permit, which you will have to print and fill out, then mail it to them. But you could go on their website if you want, it is http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/exotic_apps.htm but I thought calling them was way easier, the only thing is if you call, the office closes at 4:30 p.m.

When filling out the application, you will need either a hand written receipt signed by you and the seller and for it to say that you purchased the animal in a state that does not require permits, if the seller can not provide a temporary 20 day permit. Or if you purchased it from a regular pet store, you just need the receipt that you get from the purchase, and the temporary 20 day permit.

The permit it self is $10.00 a year, and needs to be renewed every year, and you only need one permit, you do not need to get a different permit for each animal, you can just add more animals as you get them.

It really is not all that bad, if you have a lot of questions they are very nice and patient when you call. Hope this helps you some, good luck.

Actually, believe it or not, here in New Jersey you do need permits for birds, and you are suppose to register your cats and dogs with your township. Granted, I do not know anyone who follows the cat and dog registry, but as for everyone I know with exotics, they usually follow it just because it is much more of a risk of losing your exotics if someone is to turn you in for not having the permits.
