I don't think it is so much that are simply uneducated. I think the fact nowadays is that much of, if not most, of the mainstream media is not interested in publishing the truth, or actual facts. Which do you think would be more likely to be printed? A story about "Joe the reptile enthusiast responsibly keeping his burms in locked cages", or "killer pythons from the Everglades invading Washington DC"?
