ASF miracle story
So we all know not to ever take the male away from his colony or put another male in. He'll get shredded faster than documents at Enron. But dig this story...
I came in to my herp room the other day to find ONE female out of my 1.2 colony sittin on her kids, and the second female outside the tank running behind all the tanks. I got her, but cant find the male anywhere. Im freaking out because if my wife finds a rogue asf before I do, I lose alll rat breeding privileges and have to go back to relying on the pet store prices. So I run about the house looking everywhere, finally give up after about an hour and decided to go buy some traps and what not after I do some herp room maintenance. I start cleaning rat tanks, dumpin bedding and all sorts of trash into my tall kitchen trash can that I keep in my herp room. Around my fourth tank I turn it over to dump it into the trash, but as Im about to dump it I look into the trash and see two bulgin red eyes staring at me. This little bastard has been sittin in the trash, buried in dirty bedding the whole time. Obviously scented with other rats, I face a dilemma of to put him back with his girls or not. I do.
And he doesnt get killed. Still alive 2 days later. Very weird.

Re: ASF miracle story
Glad to hear you found him. I have had a few escapes, but luckily I breed in the garage. I do my best to find them, but a few have got away...

Re: ASF miracle story
Youll be glad you found him!
If an asf gets out set up traps EVERYWHERE. I *thought* that I had caught a full tub that I had dropped while cleaning, but about $200 in chewed snake rack wires later, I guess I didnt.
I kinda hate asfs now

Come here little guy. You're awfully cute and fluffy but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat

Re: ASF miracle story
I had a snake constrict a rat, swallow it halfway, and then spit it out when I disturbed her by accident... so i tossed out the obviously quite dead rat.
Came back at the end of the day to take the trash to the dumpster and there was the rat, sitting on top and looking at me. Still half covered in snake saliva slime.

Haha! That reminds me of a snake feeding story I was gonna share a couple weeks ago and never got around to posting. One of my snakes struck & constricted like normal. Of course the mouse struggles briefly, then stops. Snake uncoils and begins swallowing the mouse, but the mouse, which was apparently only unconscious but not dead, comes back to life and starts struggling! The snake starts moving in reverse, rapidly, as if it is trying to get away, but doesn't let go. I'm not quite sure she realized the thing that was moving was the same thing that was in her mouth. She did eventually swallow the mouse while it was still alive and struggling. It was kind of funny, but also kind of horrifying to watch. I felt like I should do something to make sure the snake didn't get bitten inside her throat or something, but I was afraid anything I tried would only make the situation worse.
OP - Glad you found your runaway!
