Re: half logs
they're pretty open; BPs won't feel secure in a half-log.

Re: half logs
They are too open for the snake too feel secure. They will use them since their there and only thing available. They prefer a hide thats dark with one way in and out. You can use them for decorating the cage but not for the main use.

They're too open. A BP likes a closed in tight space to hide for security. Anything with a small hole that he could fit in through and fits him very tightly once he's inside is a good hide. I use the saucers from plant pots as hides. I cut a hole in the side, sand it down a little so there are no sharp edges, and make sure it's not too big. The tighter the better.

Re: half logs
i use black plastic bowls with an opening soldered into them for my younger animals and these with entrances cut into them for everyone else http://www.bradleycaldwell.com/image...rge/087439.jpg

Re: half logs
The natural ones are also difficult to clean, and if used in a tub will get moldy.

First post on this forum.
I have had my BP since my sophmore year of college, 1996. I got him/her form a pet store that was going out of business, it was about 2 feet at the time. I still have the snake and it eats fine, it's about 5' or more right now.
I have a half log in there as the hiding place, I guess I'll need to change that.
What would be good for a snake that size?

Re: half logs
I have a 40g aquarium for my 3ft male normal. He has a half log in there, and its backed into the corner, with the other "exit" tight against the glass. The back part of the glass there is covered. He shows no signs of stress (eats/poops/sheds well), doesn't go motoring around his cage looking for exits, and spends his time moving back and forth between hides.
1.0 Normal Ball "Hubert" (617g)
0.1 Spider Ball "Mary Jane" (280g)
1.0 Pastel Ball "Malcolm" (coming soon)
1.0 overweight Boston Terrier "Bandit"

A small kitty litter box with a hole cut out would work
Half log hides can be used successfully, but your snake will be much happier with a more closed hide.
