Boy, sounds like you've been keeping retics a lot longer than my friend!

Well I thought a tub would be ok because I've seen full sized retics in 6x2x2 or similarly sized cages and there is no way for a full grown one to be able to have any aborealness(hehe I like that made up word) in that kind of cage.
I've even heard that it's ok to keep carpets in a tub, since they are only semi aboreal I'm not sure I'd see the big difference. They have their hides as a slight perch if they so choose. Which is what I was told carpets will do and not have any problems.
And I don't want to have bad husbandry but I am just getting a lot of conflicting info.

Honestly just listen to Chris, and you'll be fine. He has taugh me quite a bit with out him even knowing, and everything he's said has been working out well for me. Bottom line is, Retic's enjoy an arboreal cage, and with a super dwarf, I think it should be very easy to accomplish, unlike with regular retic's. Go get a nice 4x2x2, divide it in half for now, and give him the extra space later. If it's a pet, then make it a nice happy, display pet, if it's a breeder, make it a nice, happy, display breeder. I don't see the point of having snakes in tubs. The reason I keep them is cause I love them, and I love to actually see them. I know tubs are convenient, but at what cost... Take fromt that what you will, ~Caylan.S.~

Everyone has different opinions on housing. Most people keep there retics in 6 and 8 foot cages including myself. But thats not to say if I did give my retics a large cage that they would not use it. Everytime Ive ever been to the atlanta zoo there retic has always been off the ground up high. Ive never seen it on the ground.

So would a 36x20x18 work for an adult SD retic?

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
I have an SD currently that is almost a year old. Hes about 3- 3 1/2 feet and i wouldnt give him anything smaller than a 4X2X1 that he is getting very soon. They're so curious and when they're awake are all over the place. But id highly suggest the SD's. They're awsome! Im thinking about getting my guy a female so i can breed at sometime. And from what ive read a tub is not the way for SD retics. I think youd be better off with a nice custom cage that is 4X2X1.

sometimes its just fun watching retics move around and you cant do that when there in a tub.

Even my balls are cruising their enclosures (not tubs) all night, and it's not because they're stressed, or hungry, or whatever else you folks think might make a ball go cruising. It's called options.
Anyhow, like I said: retics are semi-arboreal. I don't care what you see retics housed in; they do not belong in tubs or low-height enclosures.
Chris
I got my info from NERD, Henry Piorun, and Garrick Demeyer. As for my comment on my sd retics not being all that active is from my observations. Yes they do move around at night and sometime during the morning, but mostly during the day no (sorry I should a specified.) About 4 months ago (when they were about 3 feet) I did upgrade them to a CB 70, once I did that I noticed they were more aggressive than usual and went off feed, about 3 weeks and 3 refused meals later I decided to put them back in their old tubs - which was something roughly the size of a 32 qt. tub but with more height. Once I put them back, they started feeding again, and their behavior was back to what it use to be.
As for the tub debate, for Super Dwarf Retics I disagree. Not all tubs are low height. Some have more than enough climbing space for a super dwarf.
PS: sorry for the delayed response, I broke my glasses and I can barely read a thing, had to get help from my cousin to read.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
its all preference.
its like have a Rat snake in a tub.
they are semi arboreal!
a tub is ok i guess, if thats your choice..
a female should be in a 4x2x1... <-- minimum.
so, i mean... good luck, id personally go onto another site, with people who know more about retics, SDs in particular, and look around.
people dont need to jump on your case.
just do more research and good luck.
