How are you making sure the humidity doesn't affect the heatmat? Water and electricity make me nervous.

It's only really recommended to use sealed boxes for the eggs and have the rest of the setup dry if your using a heatmat as far as I know.

I realise you are battling uncontrolled temps at the moment but I really wouldn't have poked any holes in the box either for an incubator.

It might be a good idea to actually look up some plans for cooler incubators or fish tank incubators and start from scratch. Cooler incubators are probably better but you might be able to find the parts to a fish tank incubator easier depending on the stores you have around you.

If you can't get a thermostat quickly then you could try a dimmer but it is really not recommended because of the fluctuations in temp.
