Some people mistake left-wing politics with liberal legislation... two very different things, and usually they do NOT go together. In fact, it's more often the opposite, since "liberals" tend to be overzealous in protecting the masses. I'm a raging liberal myself, but more Libertarian in my beliefs - so I prefer less government intrusion, especially when the offending behavior doesn't hurt anyone.
