If a BP is heterozygous for a trait...say piebald for example. This BP has to be bred with another het pied BP to produce any pied offspring...correct?

What if this het pied BP was bred with a BP het for another trait? Would the offspring be double het or would some of the offspring appear to be a mix between the two hets?

I'm just trying to understand hets a little better...

To answer your first question. Yes, it would have to be bred to another het or a pied.

I don't really know the answer to your other question.

The for het pied bred to a het for say albino would produce animals that have a 50% chance to be het for pied and a 50% chance to be het for Albino. So they would be 50% double Poss Het Albino Pied.

The answer to question number two is 25% normal, 25% het pied, 25% het unknown, and 25% het pied and het unknown.

How about this. I have a male pastel that is het hypo/ghost. Does this mean he is 50% het for each? I could breed him with a female het for ghost and produce some ghost offspring? What possible percentages would be thrown in this case? hope this isnt too off the wall...

HE is a visual het for Super Pastel & carries the Recessive Hypo/ghost (same thing BTW) gene. So yes, he's a double het.

You could breed him with a female het ghost & you will know the EXACT # of Ghosts, Pastels & Pastel Ghosts you produce. All normal appearing offspring will NOT be pastels, but they will be 66% het for Ghost, since some may or may not have the Ghost gene & you won't know until you raise those up & breed them.

Yes hypomelanistic and ghost are two different names for the same morph.

Pastel is another gene.

If the animal in question carries one copy of the gene it would be heterozygous for that gene, In codom morphs such as pastels the animal is visually different than a normal. Where the ghost gene is a recessive trait, it needs two copies of the gene (homozygous) to be visibly different.

So with that said, a pastel ghost would carry one pastel gene and two ghost genes. where a super pastel would carry two copies of the pastel gene and no copies of the ghost gene.

You'd hatch out (if your lucky) Pastel Ghosts because the mom is het for ghost. No Super Pastels though because the dad's only a het & mom doesn't carry that gene.
