I believe this statement to be only a scare tactic..... As only a handful of parents would even follow through. Your other statement on paying rent, if you would condone the behavior if they paid rent, then you dont really care about the behavior in the first place, you are just trying to keep control which will be lost eventually anyways... I have four kids and I will probably say that garbage to them but unless they came home with a heroin addiction or something along those lines, I would just be like whatever......

I have two full grown boys, one of which is a mod on this site. I also deal weekly with people with broken and disfuctional homes. I can tell you if your attitude conscerning the little things is "what ever" you will more than likely be facing the larger ones down the road. While having or not having a reptile in the house seems to be a small thing, the real issue isn't the animal, it is the disobediance displayed. Good parents should not base punishment on the subject of the disobediance they should punish because the child was disobediant. Disobediance shows a lack of respect for authority, children need to learn how to follow the rules now so latter they stay out of trouble when that authority is wearing a uniform and carrying a gun.

OMG.... Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Men bickering like women...
When I bought my snake I let my parents know a few days ahead of time that I was getting one. I dont know if they believed me or what but I came home with my Ball Python in a tupperware container.
The second snake I got, Carpet Python, my parents did not know about until about the second day. My mom was not really that mad other then I used money to buy it that I "owed" her.
Just get it and bring it home, put it in a tupperware container in your closet with holes and you are fine. When she eventually finds out about it, you can be like, "Mommy, I have had it for "x" weeks, months, years, without you knowing or it escaping. What seems to be the issue, Mommy?"
So just get the snake! Happy SNAKE DAY!

Re: i need help
My mom is deathly afraid of snakes and constantly emails me links to news articles about snakes killing or hurting people or escaping (scare tactic things). Every single time I have to explain to her and educate her that I don't have that kind of snake and my snakes are securely housed and aren't going anywhere.
Will I ever change her mind about them? No. But I have gotten her used to the fact that I like snakes and I will keep owning them. I got my first ball python after I moved out. I told my parents after the fact and they flipped. They told me to return the snake, but there was no way that was happening. I don't live in their house, I pay for my own things and I make my own money to pay for them.
Either wait or just constantly spout snake facts to eventually get your mom used to the idea of having one in the house. It is really just a matter of education.
Don't loose your moms trust by just bringing one home. Its not worth the yelling and fighting and grudges that will occur because of it.

I dont think any pet is worth making your parents upset. Not even mad or anything similar, forget about that. But how sad would she feel If you disrespect her like that? I always thought about that when I was growing up. As first generation Inmigrants, my parents worked very hard to try to give us a normal life style.
I say just wait a bit more.... You are already 18 (or almost there?), Waiting a little bit more wont hurt.

My life lesson on parenting has been noted pops...... You go have a cafe latte and Im going to go set my kids up to be sharks instead of bait fish.....
To the original poster, you do what you do, convincing your mom to get a snake is probably not going to happen....On a real note since I was being a lil to much of myself in the first post. Make her a proposition or something along the lines of a business type deal where you both end up with something you are wanting out of the other.
